Breast Augmentation Risks Charlotte

Thousands of Charlotte breast augmentation patients know that Dr. Bryan Criswell and Dr. Kara Criswell are experts in performing natural and safe breast enhancement surgery. We know the decision to have breast augmentation surgery is extremely personal, and only you, with the help of your surgeon, can decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the potential risks are acceptable.

Thousands of patients choose to have breast augmentation in Charlotte every year. Breast implant surgery is very safe, and the downtime for our patients is usually very short. Most of our patients are back to their normal routines within days, and back to unrestricted activities within a few weeks. While in the past, breast implant surgery was occasionally somewhat painful, our patients tell us that with the new surgical techniques that Dr. Bryan Criswell and Dr. Kara Criswell use our patients need very little post-operative pain medication.

As with any surgery, part of your pre-operative care visit will include discussing the risks of the procedure, and you signing a consent form saying you understand these. Even though breast augmentation is a very safe procedure, it does have risks and potential complications. Some of the risks are specific for breast implant surgery and some are just general risks related to surgery.

Possible breast augmentation surgery risks include bleeding, infection, changes in nipple or breast sensation, poor scarring of the skin, sub-optimal position of the implant, implant leakage or rupture, the formation of tight scar tissue around the implant (capsular contracture), fluid accumulation (seroma), wrinkling of the skin over the implant, pain, which may persist, and the possibility of revision surgery.

Capsular Contracture

When an implant is placed in the body, the body forms a natural, soft capsule layer around it. It’s about as soft and thin as the filmy layer just inside the shell of a hardboiled egg. Occasionally, this capsule can become thicker and contract around the implant. This may make the breast feel firm, and if it progresses, it can displace the implant. Most cases of capsular contracture are mild and do not require revision surgery, but in some cases, surgery is necessary. In these cases, the surgeon will usually use your previous incision and go inside to release the scarring.

This is very uncommon in our patients at Criswell & Criswell because of the skill and techniques our surgeons use and the after implant care we will teach you (implant displacement exercises or “IDE’s”)

Nipple sensation

After breast implant surgery, a very small number of women experience either more or less sensitivity in their nipples. Most of the time, this is temporary, but in very rare cases loss of sensation can be permanent.

Your new breast implants

As you proceed with your decision to have breast augmentation surgery, one of the factors you must consider is the chance you will want or need to have breast surgery in the future. Although the odds are in your favor to never needing another procedure, it is possible you’ll need additional surgery in the future. Saline breast implants can leak or rupture and the implant must be replaced.

Silicone gel implants have a shell that can develop a leak or disruption, although you may not know it because the gel is cohesive, leaving the silicone inside the implant. If a leak is ever detected, it is recommended that the implant be replaced. The FDA has recommended that patients get a periodic MRI to look for a “silent rupture”, although this recommendation has been challenged by the major plastic surgery societies. The best way to understand the most current breast augmentation recommendations is to talk with your board certified plastic surgeon.
